Surrey continues to financially support Sure Start Children’s Centres, and there are six in the borough of Spelthorne. They serve families who are expecting a baby or who have a child under 5 years. They provide a service to all parents, carers and children which are mostly free, but target services especially at families in greatest need. They work in a multi-professional way and have close links with other agencies. You can get help and advice on supporting your child’s development and progress in a way to help them be ready for school, but that’s not all. We can also help with child and family health, parenting, money, training and employment. It’s a great place to meet other families and build local friendships.
Saxon Sure Start Children's Centre is a small part-time centre based on the site of Saxon Primary School in Shepperton. We have a lovely large bright playroom with direct access to an outdoor grassed play area, which the children really enjoy. We serve families living in Shepperton, Charlton Village, Halliford and Lower Sunbury. We know that not everybody can make it in to see us, so we provide services from community venues to make access easier, and outreach support in people’s homes.
‘The centre’s staff work effectively with families in their homes and in venues around the community. This helps to reduce barriers for those families who are less likely to participate in centre activities.’Ofsted September 2014
We are managed and lead by Lumen Learning Trust, the academy running Saxon Primary School, on behalf of Surrey County Council. Our Advisory Board meet three times a year and are made up of partners from the local community including parents, health, early years settings, church groups, social care, Surrey advisors, the centre manager and Lumen Learning Trust. Their role is to offer advice, challenge and support to those running the centre and they play a role in driving improvement.
